About Us & Fundraising

Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling and canoeing. But we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.

At 5th Thunderlsey Scout Group, we prepare young people with skills for life. You can learn survival skills, first aid, cooking, archery, shooting and even expedition skills that can lead on to Duke of Edinburgh Awards. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world. There’s something for every young person, whatever their physical ability.

We believe in bringing people together. We celebrate diversity and stand against intolerance, always. We’re part of a worldwide movement, creating stronger communities and inspiring positive futures.

We get the kids to develop their own Code of Conduct and anti-bullying code, and teach them to live by it.
We encourage overnight camping, weather permitting! And try to get each section away on camp at least twice a year.

Each year, every member of the District comes together to celebrate St George, the patron saint of Scouting. Each section from each group in the District gets together to take part in a parade led by a marching band. Parents and members of public cheer them along the route which leads them into the Paddocks on Canvey Island for a short service and to pick up any awards they may be lucky enough to receive. This, for many members of the District is the highlight of the calendar as many members of all ages take the opportunity to parade through public streets displaying the pride they feel to be a member of The Scout Association.

All sections meet on a Friday night (except Explorers who meet on every other Thursday, 7-9pm). Squirrels meet at 5:15pm-6:15pm, Beavers meet at 5pm to 6:15pm, Cubs meet at 6:30pm to 7:50pm, and Scouts meet from 8pm to 10pm.
5th Thunderlsey Scout Group uses the church hall at St Georges Church, Rushbottom Lane, in Benfleet, and has lots of parking.

We are one of seven groups in the district, the others being 2nd Thundersley, 5th Hadleigh, 1st Hadleigh, 3rd Canvey, 2nd Hadleigh, and 4th Thundersley, and we regularly get together on district events, fun days and camps.

There’s no better time to join the adventure

It doesn’t matter whether it’s you or your child who wants to join us, or even if your child is of joining age yet or not, because you can sign up now and ensure they are allocated a place when it becomes available.

Our dedicated adult volunteers

Makes us one of the largest, luckiest, and most family-friendly Groups in the District and with the Association’s training scheme, we are a highly-skilled bunch of people too. But we need help. Check out our opportunities to see how you can help.

Made for Adventure

Adventure is at the heart of everything we do. It is the single most important thing that sets Scouts apart. Through the everyday adventure of Scouting, young people and adult volunteers regularly experience new challenges that enrich their lives.

Over 90 young people

Enjoy exciting, challenging, and stimulating activities weekly. This has a positive impact on their lives. Every young person in Scouting enjoys a balanced range of activities, events and experiences, based around subject areas we call Programme Zones. These cover a huge range of activities, from outdoor and physical pursuits to community involvement, creative expression and learning about the wider world.

Fundraising

We are always looking at ways to increase our group income, whether it’s Bag Packing at the local Supermarket, or organising a quiz night. We have set up two new ways to help with this:
